Here’s a little something for those who love to spend a bit of time in the kitchen. The Love Lane Imperial Stout, steak and cheddar pie as created by Masterchef finalist, Christian Day. He very kindly adapted his recipe to include a can of our Love Lane Imperial Stout.


Cut the beef into bite sized chunks and sear in a smoking hot casserole with a little oil. Season well and once browned remove with a slotted spoon. Work in small batches so as to brown the meat quickly rather than stew.

Reduce the heat to medium low. Add the diced onion, carrot and celery to the pan. Place a lid on top and sweat the veg for 6-8 min. Add the chopped mushrooms, finely diced garlic and herbs and continue to sweat for 4 additional minutes.

Add the browned beef back into the pan. Stir in plain flour to coat everything. Cook out for 1 minute.

Add the can of Stout and top up with beef stock to just cover the meat and vegetables.

Place a lid on the casserole and place into an oven at 150*C for 2 hours, or until the meat is tender. Check seasoning. Allow the pie filling to cool before using.

Divide the readymade puff pastry sheet into two separate sheets. One 2/3 of the sheet. The smaller 1/3. Line a suitable pie dish with the 2/3 sheet.

Stir one handful of cheddar into the cooled pie mix. Pour the filling into the lined pie tin. Top with an additional handful of cheddar.

Place the remaining sheet on top of the dish and use a fork to crimp the edges. Lightly score the top of the pie with a sharp knife into a criss-cross pattern. Add 1tsp of water to 1egg yolk and brush the top of the pastry.

Chill for 30 minutes and then brush again with the egg yolk mix.

Place into a 190*C oven bottom shelf for 30-40 minutes until the pastry is golden brown and the filling is piping hot.

Stewing beef (brisket, cheek or shin)

2 onions sliced

Small box field mushrooms

1 can Love Lane Imperial Stout

2 sticks celery – finely sliced

2 carrot sticks – peeled and sliced



3 cloves of garlic

2 Tbsp Flour

500ml Beef stock

2 handfuls of grated cheddar cheese

Sheet puff pastry

1 egg yolk
